Have you tried Belly Ice Cream?

I always like to support local business owners and am so excited that I was able to interview the owner of Belly Ice Cream...here is the story

8 years ago when I was living in Toronto, I was shopping at Pusateri’s when I noticed in the freezer section this cute ice cream container named “Belly Ice Cream.” As always, I took a look at the ingredients list, and I was impressed to see that they were all pure and local, and nothing seemed overly processed.

Curious, I took that ice cream container home and promptly ate the whole thing! Thus began my love affair with Belly Ice Cream.

Little did I know at the time that Belly Ice Cream is made right here in Muskoka, with their Production Kitchen and Scoop Shop located right in Huntsville – and of all places across from my husband’s office!

Of course that settled it. I had to learn more about this delicious frozen treat, so I reached out to Shelley, the creator of Belly, for a little Muskoka Insider interview.

Shelley has a culinary background, doing her apprenticeship at George Brown. She is from Toronto originally, but for the last 10 years she has lived in Huntsville.

I was so curious as to how this all started – how does someone just decide to create ice cream for a living?

Shelley told me that she had been working at at Deerhsurt resort, but she wanted to find a profession before her children started Junior Kindergarten. She gave herself a few months to find something to do and lo and behold it came to her one morning at 4:00am – she would make ice cream!

That was 8 years ago. She was determined that whatever she was going to do, it had to be perfect – and her ice cream is nothing but perfect. She started out at farmers’ markets locally, and due in no small part to her own determination and tenacity, her fabulous ice cream can be found at stores all over the Greater Toronto Area – from little ice cream shops to grocery stores! Check out their map of locations to find one close to you!

Everything is made by hand and she tries to source everything locally. She makes her own marshmallows, her own cookies and brownies. She has her cones handmade and her cream is from Southern Ontario.

Of course I had to ask what her favourite flavour is, and it is Garden Mint Chip, which led to her giving an important tip: mint ice cream shouldn't be green!

I think my favourite is Lavender with wild Blueberry – it’s absolutely delectable!

As you know I am Gluten Free, and commercial Dairy normally bothers me – but Belly Ice cream doesn’t, and I know it’s because it’s pure, natural, and made by a true artisan who is passionate about what she does.

Have you tried Belly Ice Cream? Let me know your favourite flavour in the comments!

Haven’t tried it yet? Go and find some, and share your First Belly Ice Cream Experience!

FYI - Belly is now Peanut Free too!
